Our Meeting with Luz Corral de Villa
At about the same time, Barbara and I wanted to take the only trip we ever took to interior Mexico. Our friends, Rudy and Clara, kept our daughters and we caught a bus from El Paso to Chihuahua City for about three days. We stayed the hotel which another friend, Frank had highly recommended but, evidently, had not seen for several years. It was nice but was getting older and more seedy than it had been in the past when his family had stayed there. We spent time walking around Chihuahua City and sightseeing and were surprised that most of the people would look at us like we were foreigners! Luz Villa had written the following message on the back of the picture, “con todo carino para el sr y sra Welch, Luz de Villa”.
They must not have had as many tourists as we thought and we found very few other “norteamericanos” in the city. One of the interesting things we did was to take a tour by car around the city and to stop at the home of Luz Villa. the last of the wives of Pancho Villa where we had our picture made with her (for $2.50) and she personally wrote a message on the back of the photo. We went outside the see the big Dodge automobile in the garage in which Pancho Villa was riding when he was ambushed and killed on July 20, 1923 in Parral, Chihuahua.
